Install Your Own Bathroom Vanity Cabinets
Installing your own bathroom vanity
cabinets can save you a lot of money. It isn't too difficult to
do if you follow a few basic instructions. Before you know it, you'll
have a beautiful new bathroom vanity ready to use!
Depending on what kind of modern
bathroom vanities you will be adding, this could be a simple job
or more complex. Besides the bathroom vanity, there are also closets,
shelves and wall cabinets that you may choose to install. The size
of your bathroom will dictate how many cabinets you will be able to
fit.
Follow assembly instructions for any cabinets that arrive in pieces. Don't worry about doors, drawers and shelves at this point. If your bathroom vanity arrives in one piece, remove the drawers, doors and shelves and label them appropriately so you know where they go later.
While you don't need to be a professional to install cabinets, you should be as precise as possible. If you're installing more than one base cabinet, you want to make them as level and flush with each other as possible so they look like one seamless unit. The best way to do this is to take extra care with the first cabinet. Make sure it is level and plumb on both sides and front and back. Once the first cabinet is installed properly, it is easier to align the others with it.
If you have a corner cabinet or vanity, install that one first. You'll want to install the cabinet after all the plumbing and rough wiring is done, but before you put in any new flooring.
If you have any bathroom cabinets that will hang on the wall, you want to be sure the wall is level, smooth and clean. Use a straightedge to check for flatness. If there are any bumps or bulges, mark them so they can be dealt with before you hang the cabinet.
While installing your new cabinets, you may need to use small pieces
of wood as shims to make sure the cabinets are even. Tap them beneath
or behind the bathroom
cabinets as needed. Hanging cabinets will need to be hung on the
wall studs for strength. This way they will be able support the weight
of whatever you store in them.
You'll find that most vanities will have a support rail across the back. Use
this to secure your cabinet as well as using the strong edges.
You don't want to have your cabinet move about or fall. Use at least
three screws for each cabinet that will hold the cabinet securely
to the wall studs. The screws should penetrate the studs by at least
1-1/2 inches.
Take time to do the job right. You will appreciate the vanities once
they are installed in the bathroom. You will be able to use them to
store grooming tools, appliances, towels, extra toilet paper and various
toiletries and accessories. The clutter will be removed from your
counter top and you'll have a bathroom you can truly enjoy and be
proud of.
