What's
Wrong With Innerspring Mattresses?
Pressure Points
Innerspring Mattress Con
When you lie down on your mattress, your pressure points will always
rest more heavily than other parts of your body. If you sleep on your
side, for example, your shoulder will push harder into the mattress
than your calves, because your center of gravity is located over your
shoulder. The springs underneath your shoulder have more force applied
to them, so they push back harder than the springs underneath other
parts of your body. Just like jumping on
your mom's mattress as a kid... the harder you jumped, the higher
you went.

The problem with a pressure point is that it can reduce blood flow
to the area. If you've ever woken at night with a shoulder full of
pins and needles, you know what this blood loss feels like. What you
may not know is that much of the "tossing and turning" that
people do in bed is also related to these pressure points.
As pressure points restrict blood flow, your slumbering mind senses
this discomfort and changes position. The average person actually
changes position up to 80 times each night! These interruptions in
rest can prevent one from ever entering the REM sleep needed to feel
refreshed during the day.
Memory Foam Mattress
Pro
Memory foam mattresses are unique in their ability
to spread force across wide areas, rather than just a few springs.
This means that on a memory foam mattress, pressure doesn't build
up enough to cause circulation problems and disturbed sleep, so you
have more restful nights.
Vertebrae
Innerspring Mattress
Con
The gauge of a spring refers to the thickness of the wire used
to make it. The thicker the wire, the more weight it takes to compress.
With most inner-spring mattresses, the same gauge spring is used throughout
the mattress.
When you lie on your side, your shoulders push
harder and therefore sink deeper into the mattress than your legs
do. This difference throws the spine and neck out of alignment, causing
sore back and joints.

Pro
A memory foam mattress supports
all parts of the body evenly, keeping your spine aligned, and helping
to avoid chronic back pain.
Cost and Lifespan
Innerspring Mattress
Con
Today, inner-spring mattresses cost from $600 to $1200 for a quality
brand. Even the best innerspring mattresses begin to wear out and
sag after only about five years, when it should usually be replaced.
Because of the cost, though, many people sleep for more than a decade
on worn out mattresses. If inner spring mattresses provide less than
ideal support when new, imagine how they do after a decade of hard
use.
Memory Foam Mattress
Pro
Some high quality memory foam mattresses, like the Sleep Aid brand
on our site, offer twenty year warranties! That means that with a
memory foam mattress, you get four times the lifespan of an innerspring
mattress, at a very comparable price.
